At the beginning of the 1740s, the exterior of Stockholm Cathedral was transformed from a medieval brique structure to a baroque-style. The difference was striking. The Royal Palace had burnt down 50 years earlier, and a new castle was in the process of being built, and the choice was to create it baroque-style.
The Cathedral, which was the next-door church was in bad shape, especially the tower. There were initial talks about tearing the whole church down and build a new one, but the lack of funding made that an impossible option. One thing was for sure: the spire had to be replaced. Finally, the choice was to make a new tower in baroque style, which would look very strange on a medieval church. Hence, the solution was to dress the church in a baroque style plaster and stonework. The church went from a medieval stone brick church with pointed spire to a baroque style church. Thanks to the coming renovation the roman baroque style will once again be strongly articulated.
